What makes the month of June so special in Maine? Is it the increasing awareness of warm days, refreshing evenings, lush new foliage that excite us with possibilities for the upcoming summer? Or, maybe our love of celebrations which call June their own month: Pride Month, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, and the Great Outdoors Month.
In addition to the Summer Solstice, officially the first day of summer on June 20 which coincides with National Seashore Day, we have Father’s Day, June 16; International Picnic Day, which shares June 18th with Wanna Get Away Day; and a day for observing America’s dedication to the cause of freedom, Juneteenth, June 19th.
Whatever the day, the anticipation of spending more time outside appeals to most of us and
that alone is worthy of celebrating.

When visiting Wells this month, there are some special activities and events you will want to partake in. Whale watching is best in the months of June-August when you may spot Humpbacks and Minkes most often and occasionally Blue and Right Whales. Also, look for giant swordfish, dolphins and more while searching for whales in their natural habitat. First Chance Whale Watch, 2 Harbor Lane, Kennebunk, ME, tel. 207-967-5507, firstchancewhalewatch.com, offers whale watching excursions, lobster tours, and fireworks cruises. At the helm since 1998, Captain Gary Grenier and his crew know the ins and outs of providing a trip to remember.
