Have you made your New Year’s Resolutions yet?

The celebration of the new year, the oldest of all holidays, was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon, and the tradition of a new year’s resolution began. The early Babylonian's most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment. Today, some resolutions include eating healthier, losing weight, managing debt or stress, quitting smoking, and volunteering/giving back.

This year why not resolve to make this upcoming summer your best one yet? Resolve to spend your weekends and vacation time lounging by the pool with friends, joining fitness classes or walking laps in the resistance pool at the Clubhouse, challenging friends to a tennis match, enjoying quiet reading in a pocket park, or learning to body surf at Ogunquit Beach. What better place to enjoy an endless summer than at Seaglass Village?

Auld Lang Syne, a New Year’s tradition

Auld Lang Syne, often played as the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, is a long-standing New Year’s tradition. The poem was written by Robert Burns in 1788 and set to the tune of the traditional folk song “Round 6294.” Canadian band leader Guy Lombardo is often credited for popularizing the use of the song at New Year’s celebrations in the United States.

Auld Lang Syne literally translates to “Old Long Since” or, more simply, “long, long ago.” The song begins with a rhetorical question as to whether it is right those old times are forgotten, and it is generally interpreted as a call to remember long-standing friendships. Here’s a toast to new beginnings and lasting friendships!

Maine Maple Syrup

The art of making sugar and syrup from the sap of the maple tree (Acer saccharum) was first developed by the Native Americans of the northeast who used this concoction as an all-purpose seasoning (similar to the way we use salt today) and as a primary source of nourishment. Today, much of the sap is still gathered the old-fashioned way - in buckets hung from trees and boiled down to syrup over wood fires. Winter is the perfect time to enjoy Maine’s maple syrup - try warming some syrup and drizzling over your morning pancakes or waffles.

Kennebunkport's Christmas Prelude has been a town tradition since 1982 when Henry Pasco called a meeting of all the town business people. At his meeting, he suggested a unique Christmas festival unlike any of the the festivals in the surrounding towns as a way to give thanks to the residents of Kennbunk. A committee was quickly formed, the name Prelude was suggested, and the planning ensued. The first Prelude, including a tree lighting ceremony, chowder luncheon, River Tree Arts concert, candlelight caroling, and Santa's arrival by lobster boat (still a tradition today) was a huge success. Year after year, more and more business owners, local churches, schools, firefighters, and volunteers began to participate, and now, as Christmas Prelude enters its 30th year, virtually all of the community is involved.

Christmas Prelude helped Kennebunkport earn the distinction of America's #2 Christmas town by Home and Garden Television (HGTV)!

Come celebrate and get in the Christmas spirit with this year's Christmas Prelude, its last weekend is December 9th - 11th. For a list of all the activities visit: http://www.christmasprelude.com/schedule_of_events.htm

Football and Thanksgiving

Football on Thanksgiving has become as much a tradition as the turkey and stuffing! Actually, records of pro football being played on Thanksgiving date back to as early as the 1890’s with the Allegheny Athletic Association of Pittsburgh. Later, in 1902, a Football League based entirely in Pennsylvania attempted to settle a championship over Thanksgiving weekend, and in the following years members of the Ohio League would place their top competitive teams against each other on Thanksgiving day.

Although several other NFL teams followed suit and played games on Thanksgiving, the first owner of the Lions, G.A. Richards, started the tradition of the Thanksgiving day game as a gimmick to get people to go to Lions football games and to continue a tradition begun by the city's previous NFL teams.

Today, essentially every level of football from high school to college to NFL plays football on Thanksgiving Day. Many enjoy attending their alma mater football game, cheering on their high school team when they return home for Thanksgiving, while others verbally participate in the action as they watch their favorite college or pro team take on rival teams on TV. Others simply enjoy partaking in a pickup game of their own with their friends and family. However you incoporate football this Thanksgiving, enjoy the game!

(Photo: Thanksgiving – J.C.
What would you name your cottage?

Giving a home a name dates back to the old British custom of naming manors, halls, and castles. Nowadays, many enjoy naming their favorite getaways, escapes, and sanctuaries – their cottages, of course! The range of names is endless, but sometimes it’s tough to get started. Some cottages are simply named after the residents, such as Cuttinghams Cottage, while others are a play on words, such as The Angler Management Retreat.

For some ideas on devising the perfect name for your Seaglass Village cottage, see the list below of some categories and samples to get you started:

Unique landmarks or features:

•Ocean Breeze

•Seaside Sanctuary

The Wildlife:

•Deer Ridge

•Seagull's Nest

Retirees:

•Golden Dreams

•The Playhouse

Just For Fun:

•Procrastination Place

•Dew Drop Inn

Vegetation:

•Fern Cottage

•Dune Grass Getaway

Alliteration:

•Coastal Cabin

•Campbell’s Cottage

Already have an interesting cottage name?
Pumpkin Beer from Maine Breweries

October brings many treats for young trick-or-treaters, as well as some treats for adults. One of our favorite adult treats this time of year is pumpkin beer. One of New England's most popular pumpkin beers, Pumpkinhead Ale, is brewed right here in Maine. The Shipyard Brewing Company located in Portland brews this "crisp refreshing wheat ale with delightful aromatics and subtle spiced flavor." Shipyard Brewing Company, just a 40-minute drive from Seaglass Village, is the 19th largest craft brewery in the country and has been brewing hand-crafted beer using top quality ingredients since 1994.

All of their beer is crafted from recipes developed by master brewer Alan Pugsley. Pugsley's own Signature series, also served at Shipyard Brewing Co., includes Smashed Pumpkin, described as "a big-bodied beer with a light coppery orange and pleasing aromas of pumpkin and nutmeg." Some other flavors include: Old Thumper, a non-traditional English bitter ale, and Brewer's Brown Ale, a full-bodied, dark brown, tasty ale. Reserve a spot for a Full Brewery Tour on Tuesday nights from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, or stop by daily between 11:100am and 4:00pm for a virtual video tour and tasting offered every hour on the hour. Stop in the brewery's shop on the way home to pick up some pumpkin beer to enjoy back at the Seaglass Village Clubhouse, outdoor fieplace patio, or at your favorite pocket park!

If you're not in the mood for a drive to Portland, you can enjoy some of the Shipyard Brewing Co.'s beloved pumpkin beer just up the road at Federal Jack's Restaurant and Brew Pub in Kennebunkport (or "Jack's" as the locals call it). Founded in 1992 by Fred Forsley and Alan Pugsley, Jack's is the birthplace of Shipyard Brewing Company's award winning ales (because of increased demand, the Shipyard Brewing Company was later built in Portland). Overlooking the Kennebunk River, Jack's is known for its spectacular view, creative pub fare, and award-winninng hand-crafted ales. Jack's is open year-round 7 days a week from 11:30am - 1:00am, serving brunch on Sundays from 11:00am-2:00pm, also offering free brewery tours.

What is a "pocket park"?

Our vacation resort is carefully and intentionally-designed to foster a sense of community and neighborly camaraderie and “pocket parks” are a key component to achieving our unique sense of community. Our cottages are clustered into micro-neighborhoods encircling fields and wooded lots, fire pits, and shared open spaces, known as pocket parks. They are community places where people can sit by a fire pit to toast marshmallows for s’mores, enjoy a sing-a-long, have a picnic, or engage in social gatherings with family and friends. They are large enough to play a casual sports game but small enough to build a sense of community with other neighborhood cottages. Pocket parks are a great place to enjoy your morning coffee or an evening cocktail or for small children to play while adults can easily supervise from the cottage porch. They provide a more casual, intimate space for neighbors to get to know one another and offer residents the feeling of having their own backyard without having to worry about any of the maintenance. Pocket parks are just another way to enjoy the Own Easy™ lifestyle at Seaglass Village.

5 Reasons to Be Glad It's Fall!

This week might bring the last official day of summer, but there's no reason to be gloomy just because the warm days of summer are behind us. Here are some of our favorite reasons to look forward to fall:

1. Apples - From the enticing aroma of an apple pie baking in the oven, to soul-warming sips of apple cider.

2. Wool - From the cozy wool sweater you slip on to fight off the crisp Fall air, to the the fuzzy wool blanket you curl up in with a good book.

3. Hiking - From a brisk walking trail to a leisurely stroll through meadows of autumn wild flowers.

4. Football - From cheering on our New England Patriots with friends, to attending your alma mater or local high school homecoming.

5. Fireplaces - From warming up those rosey red cheeks in front of a woodstove, to cozying up in front of a blazing fireplace (like the Seaglass Village outdoor fireplace at the Clubhouse patio).

Whether you own a three-season or a four-season cottage here at Seaglass Village, there's plenty to love about fall, especially fall in New England!
